These large-scale drawings were performed in complete darkness with a live audience at Point B Worklodge, an artist residency in Williamsburg, New York (1996-2016) with Lenna Pierce on voice & cello in 2014.
I drew intuitively for 45 minutes with minimal planning, responding to the music and atmosphere and letting my body’s knowledge guide the process. The drawings demonstrate how performance can achieve balance without conscious thought, relying instead on physical intuition. Working on a large scale allowed me to move freely across the space, with my attention focused on the surface in front of me.
During the residency, I practiced creating large-scale drawings in response to sound, building a visual vocabulary rooted in musical principles. Using traditional materials like pastel and inks, I often worked intuitively, changing colours and tools subconsciously. My approach was influenced by the traditional practices of automatic drawing and writing.
I recently retrieved these drawings from storage in New York and I’d like to find a good home for them!
