In René Zuber's book Who Are you Monsieur Gurdjieff? he writes that master Georgei Ivanovitch Gurdjieff once explained that cooking was not a branch of medicine but rather medicine was a branch of cooking. I read this book when I was 16 and his way of thinking has stayed with me ever since.
There are many sources of advice on food for runners but I thought I'd write about what I've tried, tested and stuck with. I'll modify these pages as I try out new things.
The more I run the more obvious it physically becomes that a runner's diet has a massive impact on fitness and performance. It's important to think about a general diet as well as what to eat before, during and after training or racing.
My main philosophy when it comes to food is that natural and homemade is best. I eat raw and fresh whenever possible except of course, foods that need cooking to be digested. How food is cooked is important too. For example, I cook beans with wakame seaweed, which makes them more digestable. Correct food combining is also important for optimum digestion.
However, I never say that I'm not allowed anything - I believe in a sustainable diet that can always be followed. I have such a rebelious personality with no will power, I only do things if I want to do them in the short term with no regard for long term unless I trick myself. If I feel like drinking way too much booze or breaking any of my usual rules I go ahead. Sometimes being this way can be good socially or mentally - in some extreme cases absolutely necessary. When planning ahead I just ensure that I don't have certain things such as crisps, biscuits or chocolate available in my own kitchen so rule breaking really is occasional. Also, I literally wouldn't be able to stomach alchohol or junk food while in serious training or before a race because it would leave my body feeling bad at a time when it would be feeling pretty marvelous.
